A friend of mine got a new phone recently, and I put
his new number in as a new contact record. I can call
him ok, he can call me and my P900 correctly shows
his call information (number/name/picture). I can SMS
him, and he can SMS me (and again his number and
name show up correctly in the sender display).
However I can't reply to his SMS's. If he sends me an
SMS and I use the P900 reply function then the reply
SMS fails with the message "Send failed" and then
stays in the outbox. To reply to him I have to send a
new SMS rather than replying to his one. The sending
isn't failing due to lack of signal, I have loads of signal
strength and if I copy the message text into a new SMS
to him then it sends ok, just the one that I created via
'reply' doesn't send.
Any ideas why this would be the case ? No-one else has
a problem sending to him, and I don't have this problem
with anyone else who SMS's me. I've tried erasing and
recreating his contact record and the same thing happens.

check your setting for "return path". When you reply to an sms it has to go a specific route, unlike sending an sms, it takes a difference route.

I would suggest you check _his_ settings. I have encountered this problem when a Nokia was set up to send text messages as something other than SMS. Then the return path on my phone would be to a service that my phone or provider did not support.

try going to contacts and put his area code infront of his number, so, it would be(replace 805 with ure areacode, and 123-1234 with ure friends number)

Agree with HjJ here.
His messages are probably going out as something other than SMS, which is effecting the reply path. Assuming it's a NOKIA in that case and you can change the setting in MESSAGES, OPTIONS, MESSAGE OPTIONS (normally).
