I got my upgrade coming soon, i wap planning on getting a s700 but it looks as if it's going to be overpriced, and i might be tempted to get a smartphone instead. The only worry i have is that i don't have a windoze pc, is it worth getting the phone or do you need a pc to install and set up software on the phone? This message was posted from a T610

No, you dont need a pc to use the phone, i used 'my precious' for ages before connecting to my pc, and you can still get great usage from it. Dont forget you can browse to a lot of sites and download apps directly, you dont need to have pc connection to do so.

I have a computer and can download things. i belive the phone has memory cards which i can read or write from my computer, can you transfer files and apps this way? Or does it have to be done using windows software via usb or something? Memory cards are fine, but i can't do usb, btooth or ir. This message was posted from a T610

Without a PC you wouldn't be able to Sync with Outlook (i.e. Contacts, calendar etc. but I don't anyway) but main issue is you won't be able to Backup your phone.

Apart from that you can do everything on the phone or just transfering files directly to the Memory Stick. All applications are in a self install .sis file which you can just put on the Memory Stick, put back into the phone & install.

After using P... series phones for over two years now I have never lost my data or had a need to restore a backup so don't be put off. The P910i is a great smartphone and for someone who has never had a P800/P900 you will be amazed at how useful it can be.

with out a PC you wont be able to put movies or TV shows or oggs on to your phone or browse the net for free or back up your data incase your phone screws up. I had to use my p800 for some time with out a pc as mine was bust and the lack of functionality was unbelievble and most annoying thing was my C drive got to filled and would not restart thus i lost all my data and very important pictures which i never got back . Still its a good phone with out PC but i my self would be dissapointed with out one i think you'll be better off with the S700.

He has a computer but probably a Mac so he could transfer files directly to the memory card and I'm sure there is an ogg converter for a Mac or Linux PC

i know i thought maybe he was running BBC or Linux or something that probably wont support p900 shit. I think everyone knows you can do all PC stuff on a MAC when it comes to PXXX

Actually the computer i have is an amiga, which treble boots as either amigaOS3.9, macOS8 or linux, so i can run any apps for linux or mac, and i can read/write flash cards from amigaOS, but i cant access the usb ports under linux or macOS (and i doubt SE ported the drivers and software for to amigaOS ).

Is there software for linux or mac (or any free-source software) to cannect the phone via a serial cable? or would it have to be usb? i'm not too worried about syncing contacts and calender as i never use the calender or address book on the computer anyway.

Amiga!! Now that brings back fond memories (A500 only). Admire your "staying" power

To my knowledge all the docking stations available have a USB connector on the PC end even though they are actually serial comms at the P... series end.

I'm only familiar with using PC based software. As I said earlier, only thing your missing really would be the ability to Backup your phone (and do home Flash updates if you wanted). You must know someone who has a PC that you could occasionally backup to if this is a concern.

Don't forget you would need a reader for your Amiga that can read MS and if you went for P910i then MS PRO cards.

The older none PRO readers won't read the card supplied with a P910i.

You could always buy one from somwhere like CPW to give it a try and return in their 14 (or 7?) day no reason return policy.

Yeah, you can use usb card readers which support ms, and i think there's adaptors which allow you to read memory sticks in normal CF readers. This message was posted from a T610
