Been browsing WAP and got me wondering...

When you pay for ringtones, etc, they send a text to your phone immediately. So, can these sites see your phone number??
What's to stop some home-brew WAP site logging up phone numbers to be used in some evil way??

Also, your phone must have a unique ID tag or something (eg. MSN WAP will remember me if I'm already logged in, even if I've deleted ALL the WAP cache/history/cookies, etc..) Plus Orange know who I am every time I log on!

There must be some kind of security...?

Orange use your phone number to bill you & browser user agent string to determine what model of phone you use.

Your phones user agent string tells wap sites what phone it is and what content it can view & download (internet browsers do this aswell)

I have not seen a way of knowing your mobile number. But I can see each mobile phone make & model, software version (as given out by the user agent string) and their wap gateway ip address. So I could trace a user so far. But couldn't do them any harm. I am not a hacker though ?!?

The WAP-site of my mobile provider knows my phone-number, because I can view my e-mail without logging in.

This is when I browse via the WAP gateway. When I use WAP over internet GPRS, this privacy-breach is not available to them...

The operator has the right to 'spy' us, its for our secure too, just think if your mobile get lost and the imei isnt overwritten yet, they can block it. Many infos of us is known in the centre, do imagine when they read my sms or mail, but i dont care. This message was posted from a T630

As long as u don't care,it's ok. Just don't do it over mobile if u want2b safe. But u talk about 2 diff'rent things:ur operator has to know all the details cuz it's its business while 3rd party firms could harm u.Those ringtones sites can't cuz their business is done thru a gsm operator and they can't c any detail;the whole process is automatic.Nuthin'2worry.
