I've been following this story a little lately but today I have read quite a few news items about it so thought I might mention it here.

It seems that Symbol Technologies have patents covering various aspects of the wi-fi technology and just last week collected $23 million damages from Proxim and are expected to request licence fees and 6% royalties from any manufacturer using wi-fi technology and in particular, access points which infringe their patent

one site to read about this is InfoWorld

sounds like a big deal for alot of companies and I expect the cost of wi-fi products are likely to increase to cover those costs

They'll just pay the fine and license probably. Same thing happened to sony and ms with the dual shock rumble in their control pads. Turns out immersion had a patent covering haptic feedback which is cpu controlled feedback. MS paid then off and bought a stake in the company last year. Sony didn't and just lost a court case. They now owe 86m and will either have to cease sales of dual shock pads or pay a license, which means they also pay ms lol :-D they're appealing though. This message was posted from a Z600
