I have noticed if you add a large (640x480) picture to a contact the picture is not shown and the custom ring tone is not used when the person calls, also picture is not shown when receiving an SMS either.
Picture is displayed and custom ring tone works if you add a small (160x120) or medium (320x240) picture to the contact.
