The latest handsets such as the S700 and the V800 look quite different. What aspect of their design is ///? Was the T610 the last European designed handset?

it's just they are comine and pushing the product into another high level as both of them have thier specialty.

I wouldn't say that the T610 is a european design.
It is hard to say. Japanese design has been on a high level for some decades now that it is impossible to filter out the influence it has had on european design.
But even before the merge with Sony the E design was peculiar. I think you could mistake some of the older E phones for Japanese design. Well at least they were the first to apply design of some kind to the phones - that is why we like the brand so muchg isn't it.
But also on the other side, the S- brand has been known for having an eye for design. Everything the produce, from tv sets to walkmen, has been designed with loads of taste and that is why the brand stands out too. Their phones also were very interesting.
So in my opinion the two brands are a good fit.
To see what the effect is you can compare the t68m and the t68i and also the t66 and the t600.
Also bear in mind that the portfolio for the americas, for europe and for asia is really quite different. Some models they produce in the asian market are quite shocking for us, and most of the amarican models are plain ugly to our standards.

I know this may a hard concept for some people, but
actually merged a coupla years back, they have their own design department, their own research and so on and so forth.

i hate to break it to you, but other companies ie siemens also use an icon desktop. It's not a stolen design, it just hapens to work quite well navigation-wise which is why more than one manufacturer has adopted it.

The most advanced design (the premini!) is now in Japan apparently.
I think that SE has a brand-look, however they do not keep it for long enough. The 2003 products had a family-look (creamy-white sometimes with pearl finish) for the 68-200-300-100-600-800. Now it is more the metallic look (aluminium, chrome, steel-like).
You can see that a lot of form-factors are introduced by SE first and then taken over by followers like Siemens and Sharp. Sometimes it looks like there is an ericsson inside.
