I am not sure if it is my screen savers(Fellowes) or the way I am tapping the screen but I was wondering if there is a correct way to tap the onscreen buttons so they are selected rather than being recognized as a period or letter

Everyone gets this I think. it's because you looking at the screen at an angle and just missing the icon a little. The p900 sees this as text input! it's an annoying glitch but if you tap the centre of the icon everything should be ok... hopefully
