Is it possible?

I have 162003/5 R4A04 and due to an MMS problem want to upgrade to the latest version.

Mine used to be an O2 branded phone, but I had it unbranded and upgraded to R4A04 by the service centre.

Obviously now it detects that I should be an O2 branded phone and doesn't let me update.

I don't want to have to go to the service centre and wait 4 working days for the phone.

Is there a way to spoof the update service? fingers crossed

I think you can just flash the phone. This means wipe EVERYTHING except the OS (Symbian) using a tornado cable (I think they are called tornado.....) they can be bought on ebay for a tenner, but make sure they work for your phone, I know they work for the p800, but ask about compatibility with the more advanced pxxx series anyways.

Flashing basically restores everything to exactly as it was when it came out of the factory.

Hope this helps...

But I can't see how this will solve the problem. The update service will still be able to tell from my IMEI that I am an O2 phone.

"terminator" dongle is what it's called... sorry...

Umm... I dunno if I'm supposed to say this, but you can change the IMEI via a terminator cable (i think) but I wouldn't suggest it. Aside from that I'm not sure how you're gunna get it done.

Wait... You want new firmware right? Well, with the terminator dongle you can install new firmware regardless of IMEI (i think) so ask around (sellers of Terminator)

Nick - do you have any experience of unlocking? Is it straight forward (not changing imei - just unlocking. I understand you can do it with a data cable right? might boost the value of my Orange p900 on ebay!)

Sorry, no, I have no experience, otherwise I'd do it for you, but I haven't done any so it might not be the best idea that I try . However, you can get it done at most shopping centers in the UK. Eg, if you live near staines, those people in the little stalls in the middle of high street should be able to help you out. Otherwise, I'm sure other little stalls will do it, and if you look around online, others can too.

However, I'm not sure it will boost the value that much really, 'cause people realise that it is quite easy to unlock the phone anyways. However, I am quite sure that there are comprehensive guides out there, just throw a google search at it....

Sorry i couldn't help more,

What's the MMS problem you are having... I am having a problem reading text from a Nokia handset sent via MMS. I am using the same version of the firmware.

Thanks.

EDIT: Just kidding... I am using the latest firmware version.

Just Kidding? Wow... Love your sense of humour.

Well, as for the mms thing, I can only ask, what nokia handset was it? Was it a symbian phone?

You CANNOT upgrade the P900 firmware with a Terminator dongle. You can only do that with SE Fighter and similar (expensive) kits... think around £300.

You could always take your phone to an SE update centre and have them flash to the latest firmware for you. I made a post on here a month or two ago about SE service centres in Glasgow, do a search and you'll get the phone numbers.
