Are UK contract phones on the various networks locked as general rule?

Unless you get them from an independent retailer like Carphone Warehouse, who can usually provide unlocked and unbranded phones an all networks if asked.

I'm afraid that's not true. CPW stock is generally unbranded for O2, but increasing numbers of Voda and T-Mobile handsets have to be bought direct from the networks as locked stock, and all Orange stock is branded and boxed by Orange.

As a general rule, though, O2 and Voda are unlocked and T-Mobile and Orange are not.

I was just repeating what my local CPW told me last week, when I last bought a phone. As I understood it, you can get unlocked/unbranded phones on pretty much all networks if you ask, but if you don't ask you're likely to get stock thats come direct from the network rather than from CPW's own stocks direct from the manufacturer.

I or the salesperson could be wrong though - its worth asking!

There is some truth in it, in as much as sometimes (generally on Voda) we are able to sell generic and network-locked stock, and will therefore try to shift the network-locked stock first as people who do have a preference, would rather have unbranded stock.

But most of the time, there is no choice, it depends what the purchasing boys have bought that week!
