If you refer to the MiniGPS application from Psiloc, it just learns the telephony cells (antennas) you come across, and can trigger various events based on them.
For example, it can wake you up when you arrive in a certain train station, so you don't miss it. Of course, this is based on the supposition that the application previously learned that cell and that you set up an allarm on it.

@CieD
Actually no, that's wrong!
MiniGPS is an app that uses Phone Network transmitters to triangulated your position.
Each transmitter has a unique ID which the phone can recognise.
Only trouble is it's not preprogrammed to know where each transmitter is so u have to tell it where it is when it collects the transmitters. Effectively u can only have it recognise areas you have been to & told it.
It has no map functionality but simply can tell u when u enter a certain area & u can set reminders by location

Here is the description from my-symbian.com:

miniGPS is a powerful tool to locate yourself in the GSM network. Its main goal is to perform defined actions based on your location taken from your network. It also shows the details of the network cell, to which your phone is logged in at the moment. At the current stage, due to some problems in SE firmware the program shows only cell id, but it seems to be good enough for performing events.You can create your own database of network cells by adding the ones you are logged to and also the ones you want to type in. However, the best of all is that you can create EVENTS! Once you have a few cells in your database you can create events on the basis of those cells.Currently miniGPS offers five event types:Log in alarm, Log out alarm, Log in switch profile, Log out switch profile Log in power off, Log out power off, Log in change image, Log out change image,Log in SMS, Log out SMS That means,you can create an event to have an alarm at the moment your phone logs in (or out) a selected cell. So you will be able to sleep calmly in your train to work or school- it will wake you up precisely at your station, even if your train is late? You can also set it up to remain you of speed controls! For every such alarm you can select any sound file from your device (also prepared by you). For places like church, theater, hospital etc. you can set a flight mode event which will just switch the phone part of your P800 off as soon as you come there! No more embarrassingrings during performance! Since in big cities you are usually in range of a few network cells you can collect them all and put them to the groups like Home or Office and than you can create events for the whole group instead of individual cells.For those who like to be well informed miniGPS displays not only the name of the current cell, but also its identification number and even the current signal strength in dBm units. dBm values are displayed according to C2 parameter - it works very accurate that way.

It would be cool with lists with geografic names on the SP gsm tower numbers. Atleast my provider don't show any names to go with the number so it's no fun at all (I know I can name them by hand but I can't be bothered stopping every few meters to check wich cell I'm on hehe) (I have TeliaSonera in sweden)

I read in another thread on these cells that (in the UK anyway) they change the cell IDs every 3 months or so - is that true?
btw there is a site that supposedly tells you where all these masts are, their cell IDs, and the operator called
Sitefinder, but when I tried putting some cell info into my P800 with miniGPS off that site none of them worked!
