> Wifi - The Wireless Revolution?

Hi my friends,
Many people are predicting that Wifi and its variants will kill #G in the future. Once Wifi has matured, many of us will be carrying Wifi enabled products and might ne no need for 3G. Is the golden age here?

while 3g carriers continue to charge exhorbitantly for the service compared to what wifi operators charge for their home and roaming service, I think wifi stands a very good chance of becomg a big hit when it gets incorporated into more phones. at the moment your average joe in the street isn't interested in carrying wifi enabled PDAs etc but if its already in their phone with simple operation then they will go for it big time.
I guess the question is, how many phone manufacturers are going to add wifi when it will reduce the income of the phone operators?

You are right on. I am working on a project right now, where several ISP are going head to head with GSM operators to provide hi-speed connectivity on the go. It is looking good here with this project and the operators are a bit nervous. 3G is a novel idea and has a niche market but once wifi hits critical mass, there is no way 3G can keep up.

The biggest problems with wifi right now are coverage and handoffs. Say you're in a cafe that has a WiFi access point, but you leave and walk across the street into another access point's "cloud"; WiFiers are still working out how to handle the handoff as seamlessly as GSM networks do when you move from one tower's coverage area to another. I'm told it can be done, but right now it isn't easy--not to mention the billing issues should you move from one provider's wifi cloud to another in the middle of a call. Even if the handoff could be performed successfully, the wifi providers would need to have some sort of "roaming" agreement.
I suspect phones will incorporate it; if they don't, PDAs with phones and wifi access will become more and more common, forcing the handset makers', well, hands.
Things get really interesting when you start using an application like Skype over Wifi (or 3G), turning your calls into data and depriving the mobile operators of call-time or long-distance revenue... (though for that data prices on 3G will have to come down...)

WiFi is not exactly gonna take off...a new form of it is slowly being developed...just like it but new protocols, WiFi was not originally made for masses with high security. As of this, there are companies developing new versions WiFi to add security.
It's hard to explain, but our standard WiFi isn't going to expand like you think it is...yes it will expand, but these new versions of it are the ones expected to take over!
But yeah, voice-over-ip and such is coming out, I mean it's rumored that the Nintendo DS system will have that as a feature.
*Actually there is a huge conspiracy theory that the new WiFi nintendo will be using will create a global network! (which I want to know if this is true as I have read alot on it and it seems to be the message nintendo is trying to say)
