You can't use Gmail, that's for sure. As far as hotmail is concerned, I am not a 100% certain.

The free services that gmail and hotmail provide don't offer pop3 at all, so it won't work. Not sure about paid hotmail services.

I use the paid hotmail service and it still doesn't provide pop3 access to your hotmail but it does provide access from within hotmail to other pop3 accounts

I'm pretty sure you can just navigate to hotmail (as in
www.hotmail.com) through gprs to access your email. I can't think of a specific instance where I've done so but I can't see why it won't work. If you're on a low gprs plan (with no free credit) it can be a bit expensive but it's quite helpful if you just need to pull something out of your mail when you're on the run.
Gmail currently can't be acessed through standard html and is therefore incompatible with basically all mobile devices at present, due to the complex dhtml and other scripts which make the gmail interface work. They are supposed to be developing a standard html version of the page sometime soon, maybe we'll see it in the next few weeks/months, you never know.
Anyway, just a suggestion.

you can go on to your hotmail email account on your phone web, just make sure that you have got your wap account turned off,and you will be able to log in and view your emails for free aswell so you dont have to pay hotmail to send them to you by text message
i hope this helps
