Sorry if I am reapting myself and other posts.....
My phone seems to have version R3C002 on it and all the files to download from
http://www.totalserver.net/s700i.htm#import are for R3B.....this would imply that they are not correct for my phone .
Like he says below:
Examples of file names
Normal Firmware File - S700_R3B032_ZONE_1.S7S
Language file - S700_R3B032_EU1.S7L
Default Language File - S700_R3B032_EU1.S7D
Customisation file - S700_R3B032_EU1.S7C
Important Information: the parts in bold and italic must match or your phone will not work
Now mine is R3C.......
Ideas please guys before I kill my phone with the wrong update....

It´s pretty much the same story as with the T*** series and Terminator dongle..
If you want it unlocked/unbranded, go for the FW offered even if it´s older, you can always upgrade your now unlocked and unbranded phone again later.
If you only want to unlock it it doesnt matter what FW you or they have since unlocking only doesn´t mess with the FW.
I could be out on a limb here considering the new RSA protected FW though, come to think of it..
Anyway, I would definetly do it and upgrade FW later when phone is unlocked/unbranded.

Also I am hoping to use the old synch cable that I have still got with my R380s (world) phone. Its a serial cable with the usual SE head. I have also ordered an SE cable (DCU-11) hope this one will work.

I have my doubts about your cables though.. If I were you i´d bite the bullet and order a cable along with my credit..
That way you are 100% sure it´s not the cable´s fault, should something go AWOL.

R3C is the vodafone firmware only (latest).
R3B is the latest original firmware.
DCU-11 won't work. DSS-2x don't work and DCU-11 is the cable used in such stands.

just got my s700 about an hr ago its vodkafone branded and i dont like it, u cant even use mp3's as ringtones...
how do i get its version number? and how reliable is the unbranding? I had me p800’s fw updated at a proper SE place and it foobared… so what chance is it of happening at home if I do it my self? And what happens if it does go wrong???

You will see current SW version in your phone (for example R1L013 or R3C002 for T610).
