> More maths: proof that 2 equals 1
Bookmark topic
my little contribution to the latest esato maths craze!
proof that 2 equals 1
revision: remember that what you do to one side of the equals you must do to the other side to keep the equation the same
assume a = 1 and b = 1
so a = b
multiply both sides by a gives
a² = ab
now subtract b² from both sides gives
a² - b² = ab - b²
now factorise giving
(a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
divide both sides by (a-b) gives
(a+b) = b
we started by saying that a = b so
a + a = a
or
2a = a
diving both sides by a gives
2 = 1
QED!
edit: thanks for supplying the ². I have now changed the ^2 for that!

When you factorise... you cannot multiply by zero (a-b) etc.. Let's have playtime!

nearly right. there is no multiply by zero but there is a divide by zero and that is the flaw
and for my next trick I will go on to prove that black equals white and get run over at the next zebra crossing! (thats for HHGTTG fans)

I see what you mean about the dividing by zero, but essentially you're dividing 0 by 0, which equals infinity. Just like dividing any (non-imaginary) number by 0.
Fun though.
Damn infinity, ruining everyone's fun, it's his fault Superman can't turn back time!

absinthe is right when it comes to why the equation is wrong.
but i thought this was worth a mention:
if you get an answer like 2=3 or 1=2, the equation is false, either making it unsolvable (like 3=0*y, solve for y) or (more likely) you did it incorrectly.
