i have tried to restore my p900 backup file on to my p910i via synchstationi keep getting error saying backu file not recognised how do i resolve this?

You can't - it is not possible. The file formats are not compatible, and it is only possible to restore a backup of the same model of device.

However you should be able to extract the calendar and contacts DB from the backup file (rename to zip) and manually copy them back into your new phone by starting a backup and then stopping it as soon as the phone reboots, you can now access the protected files with File Manager and overwrite them.
I did this from my P800 to my P910i
