I've been very gentle with it, but after 3 month the up direction, which I use the least fails to work sometimes. Is this common problem with this model? Can it be fixed?

Because it's only three months after you bought it, it a option to go back to the shop you bought it from. They can send it to SonyEricsson to let it repair under the 1-year warranty.

My T610 joystick stopped working after 6 months in most directions.If you open it up you will just get dust on the screen due to static.It's not dust,they just fail.I had mine fixed for free under warranty.If it's a contract phone or you have a receipt,you can get it fixed for free.
