1. LG has overtaken SE in volume sales in Q3 04. SE has not improved in ranking. In fact SE would hv dropped one position if not for the technical trouble Siemens is having with its new line of phones.

2. Quarter-on-quarter volume growth (from Q2 to Q3 of 2004) is stagnant which may indicate that growth has plateau. Similar figures for Nokia and LG shows double digit growth.

3. For Q3 04, SE dropped out of the top 5 in worldwide smartphone volume sales. Volume sales has declined for SE whereas others like Nokia, Palm and RIM saw huge increase in sales.

4. Only 3 major phones were launched in 2004 (K700,S700 and V800). The others like T630, J200, T290, P910 are all remodelled phones with no significant improvement from previous model.

5. SE design has lost its touch. The J200 and T290 designs clearly show this. The biggest no-no is that the designs of these low end phone are just a comestic variation of K700. This will inadvertantly deprecates the image/value of the higher-end K700.

6. The S700 is priced too high for its value. For the premium price, other than camera and a card slot, it has no improvement in features over the K700. And the S700 is way too big and heavy for a non-smartphone.

So do all the above indicate that the rot is starting to set in for SE?

If u think so, what can be done to stop the rot. If u think otherwise, give some reasons to support that.

@mib1800

I'll answer each point you made in turn;

1.) SE might not have moved up, but they haven't moved down either. If they are 'losing it' then one would expect them to perhaps drop down more than one place.

2.) Figures are not always representative of facts, stagnant growth figures may be due to other factors than consumer discouragement. Stagnant growth figures also show that SE isn't shrinking either.

3.) SE hasn't launched a major new smartphone since the P900; the P910 was only released fairly recently, although, as you say, it isn't a major improvement. No one company can expect to do well all the time, there are always periods when one's rivals will have anew product out that will sell well. SE not being as big a company as Nokia perhaps can't release the same number of products in the same time frame.

4.) Isn't that what Nokia do, except on a grander scale? Remodelled products aren't my idea of value for money, but then again SE isn't as big as other manufacturers, perhaps they were looking to consolidate their position this year and so choose to release fewer models with the aim of keeping costs down.

5.) This is a completely subjective matter, just because you are not a fan of certain SE designs does not mean to say that they are necessarily bad.

6.) It also has a better screen than the K700. Irrespective of that it is again a subjective matter. I don't consider it 'too big and heavy' at all, in fact I now use it as my main mobile phone ove rmy K700, which is smaller and lighter.

No I don't think it is. SE is a relatively small mobile phone manufacturere and it ha sonly been trading for a few years. It will require time and effort for it to be able to get itself into a market leading position, that rarely happens overnight.

I read yesterday that had overtaken LG this quarter? That was from an interview with the head guy at
On point 4 you also forgot that they released the K500 and F500 (yes I know they are really the same phone).

obviously total market share is not the primary concern of SE judging by the fact that it barely has any entry level phones, where nokia gets most of its sales. SE goes for the mid-level and premium market.

while SE may have lost a place to LG, there are two very critical stats you may be overlooking:

1. its sales volume is still increasing at a pretty healthy rate, considering the market segments it is focusing on.

2. much more importantly, its average price per phone is much higher than the competition's. no one is even close there.

now if SE can manage to sell its phones at a hgher price than the competition and still grow its sales, surely there must be something it is doing right, huh?

@senninha

It is true that SE seem to focus strongly on the mid-range to high-end markets, but they are slowly moving into the low-end market too. As I said before, these things take time, especially for a relatively small company that is operating in a fiercely competitive market alongside much larger companies. I think we need to be more realistic about what we expect from SE.

In the interview with the head of interview
it was said that phone sales has increased by 24% on the same time last year, to me that is not stagnent. Quarter to quarter results can vary quite a lot so IMO doesnt signify anything.
As far as design goes, that is all a matter of taste.

@jcwhite_uk

As I said earlier, stagnant growth figures are necessarily indicative of a poor performance by SE and the sales figures you quote back this up.

Decreased market share does not necessarely also mean declined volume sales since the total market for smartphones has grown as well.

I believe however, that not-so-smartphones are still selling in much larger volums than smartphones and that's where SE gets most of its money from currently.

With the introduction of UIQ 3.0 we can expect more smartphones from SE in various shapes and price segments during next year according to SE.

SE still earns more money per sold unit than most other manufacturers (it even increased in Q3).

Its a deliberate strategy from SE to have few distinct phone models in their product profolio costs down.

In the whole, no I don't think they have lost it. Whatch out for SE on the smartphone market during next year.
