Hello everyone.
A number of OrangeScribble users have expressed interest in a topic-driven chat service, so they can use the app to chat with other pen handset owners. We have implemented a simple buddyfinder service that enables you to make yourself available to chat, and to provide a suggested topic of conversation.
Here's how it works: To use the site, you must have an OrangeScribble account (which you get by installing OrangeScribble on a P800/P900/P910 and creating an account). You log in to community with your OrangeScribble username and password.
Once you have registered for Community, every time you log in to OrangeScribble your username will appear on the Community website, and will remain until a while after you've logged out. Other users who would like to chat can use the Community website to add you to their buddylists at their discretion. You of course have the option to either add them to yours or decline the invitation. You can unsubscribe from other users at any time, and you can remove yourself from the community service at any time.
Only if you register for the service will your OrangeScribble username be visible to other users on the site.
The site is at
http://scribble.orange.us/community , and is sized for mobile screens. As always, we very much appreciate any feedback you'd like to give us, either on this site or our developer blog at
http://scribble.orange.us/blog or via email to scribble @ orange.us . More about OrangeScribble can be found at
http://proto.orange.net/scribble .

Good update.. I was waiting for something like this. Ever since the first release it was extremely hard to utilize the service as there was no way to get a hold of members unless they added you to their buddy list. I'll check that out.
Update:
I managed to logon the community.. I'm not sure if I'm joining a community or adding a buddy. The server sais I have to wait for a response from the buddy. I thought this was simply joining a community like IRC or ICQ. I'll keep testing..

You're doing both. When you sign up, your username becomes visible to others have signed up (the community part). You may also add them as buddies (saving you the trouble of having to use the OrangeScribble client to do so). If you do this, it follows the usual buddy subscription process, where they must accept your invitation using the OrangeScribble client to appear in your buddylist.

Are there any profile views available at all? So far I only see an option to add a topic. I'm not sure if Scribble has considered a Community that would allow members to connect to members without authentication. The reason I say that is because I normally turn turn off the program if I don't get a quick response within a reasonable time frame. I gather most users are probably doing the same as they are more likely utilizing other features on their phones and don't have time to keep the program open and idle for an extended amount of time. I think having a gaming type of community where one can play simple games like "tic-tac-toe" wouldn't require any kinda of authorization if all potential members know the risk of joining that particular community.

The only profile we support so far is showing your username, photo, and a subject line of your choice. Your info will stay visible while you're logged on and after that in the "recently logged on" list until more recently logged on push you out.
Yeah, we appreciate that it's impractical to leave OrangeScribble running for long periods of time--that's why we have the recent list. We might do more later, but wanted to try this out first. One key thing is that we would like to make sure it delivers as much Instant Gratification as possible--it's no fun to add a bunch of buddies who never log in to add you back.
Thanks a lot for the feedback! Over the next couple of days we'll see if it draws any interest.

Bobafett,

Yes -- OrangeScribble Community enables you to find other OrangeScribble users, even if you don't know them or their usernames. This way, you don't need to have a friend with a capable phone to try out OrangeScribble, you can connect with other users around the world.
Once you've found another user with this service, you can add them to your OrangeScribble buddy list. Once they accept, you will see their icon when you next log in to OrangeScribble.

I attempted to add a couple members to my account that I noticed on the community room and I have not yet received any responses. The only contacts I have at the moment were created some time earlier this yr. However, the system doesn't tell me if I'm attempting to add a contact that I have already added. What I also can't tell is whether the contacts are online or offline. I'm guessing the point of the community is to see who's online, but then again, it's hard to discern between online vs offline or idle.
