i was having an arguement with a mate in a pub last night. he was convinced sendo made the first mobile. i mean come on! sendo do not have the brains and imagination for that!
i am pretty sure it was motorola but i cant be 100%.
also (and i find this funniest) he is convinced a sendo phone (cant remember what model it was) can switch between gsm and umts!! how stupid can a man be!?

AT&T patented the concept of the portable phone system in 1947. Motorola made the first cell phone call in April 1973. AT&T and Bell patented the first functioning cell network in 1977. The first city in the world to have a working cell network was Tokyo in 1981. The Japanese technology was developed independently of the US system. This message was posted from a T68i

i wonder......
sendo sound like they could be japanese, the jap system was independent so maybe sendo could have had something to do with the first (japanese) mobile. maybe he is right in a roundabout way.

Here is a link describing the detail that absinthebri is giving

as a side note, Australia was a very earlier adoptor of mobile technology and for years had the highest uptake on a per capita basis. mobile phones first became commercially available in Australia in 1986 and that when I started buying phones. I can remember that on offer at the time was 4 phones. an NEC and a motorola car mounted phone and an NEC handset (which is the one I started with) and another handset from a manufacturer I can't remember and who didn't last long past their first model.
