If you're on Orange....Do they release their contract phones unlocked in the UK?

Normally no, but you can unlock the phone but keep the contract, theres nothing wrong with that! Orange wont tell u off, just you might vid the warranty!

Depending on handset you can likely get it unlocked at some market stall for half that price, but I figured might as well pay the extra so at least I have the code if there are any future problems and it keeps Orange happy.
The only draw back is they won't let you buy the code unless you also pay off the remainder of your contract (i.e. if you are 3 months into a contract they'll want 9*monthly amount as well as the unlocking fee. You don't loose that money it just goes into credit on your orange account, but obviously if you're past your contract length (usually 12 months) then they'll give it to you with just the unlocking fee.
Finally, why the fee? (I'm sure someone will ask) I don't believe they have the codes and they have to request them from the manufacturer so I believe this is really an admin charge for their effort as you have to wait upto 7 days for it.

Thanks folks for your comprehensive replies. Will be doing a lot of travelling over the next 6 months, forced to go contract to get the coverage.
Maybe I'll just get it done remotely for a fiver or something via Totalserver or some such.
