> p900 on ATT/Cingular network
Bookmark topic
I was almost ready to switch in light of the new merger here in the U.S. but then I heard most of the network is on GSM 850. Anyone have this provider or can verify this? I';m not going to give up my p900 just to switch providers.

They will continue to support the existing bands. It's just that they will not put any effort in expanding the coverage for them. For where they won't have converage you'll simply end up borrowing another carrier's towers (ie T-Mo). The solution that you might consider down the road is to invest in a P910a which will take full advantage of that band.

I have a P900 on Cingular and have had very few problems. I live in NC and use the 1900 band and get a better signal than I did with my Cingular branded T616. The only real problem I've had so far is with MMS. I cannot recieve sound or video. Cingular tells me that their MMS isn't 100% working yet and that that is the problem.

We won't know all the terms of the merger til at least the end of November. Until then you should know that the Cingular network is almost entirely 1900 band and the ATT network has widespread 850. No company in the U.S. has the 900 band, so your p900 should be fine for now with most networks, as long as nothing topples every company's 1900 towers.

so bigfeet is right in that for service in the U.S. I should get the p910a which would let me access the 850 towers.
why don't they just make a quadband p-series..

At some point down the road it may be true that the majority of U.S. GSM coverage may be 850. That is on a large timeline though. By the time that statement really comes true I am sure there will be much better mobile phones available to us. Until that time a P900 will work well in the U.S.
That being said, I still think it is a wise decision in the U.S. to buy a phone that supports all U.S. bands. I purchased a P910a and should have it within the week.

This also depends where you're located at. I'm using the s700 which only has 1900 and it works just fine. Keep in mind that i'm on the west coast where cingular originaly built their network on the 1900 band. This network will soon belong to t-mobile but cingular will have access to it for 4 years under an agreement between both entities. By then, this phone will be obsolete.

I have been using cingular with triband 900\1800\1900 phone for amost two years now in San Francisco Bay area without any problme at all. First I had SE-Z600 and now SE-P910i. I want 900 frequency for the ability to use them in asia so not willing to give up my 900 MHz phone. I think 1900 would still work fine for next few years and by then hopfully SE will come up with quad bank Pxxxx.
One thing I don't understand why we Americans have to be different than everybody else. Most of the whole world can work just fine on 900 frequency only here that I know of that 850 is being used. WHY???

I use ATT in Oklahoma my daughter has Cingular when traveling to downtown Dallas her phone switches to 850 and works where my P900 does not. I travelled to Arkansas recently and had the same problem. Am looking to purchase the P910a soon for this reason.
All in all it depends on where you travel if the 850 band is an issue or not. For me it is.

I believe it has to do with the fact that 900 is too similar to a radio frequency used by a government organization like the coast guard or police or something.
