The reason for this is that the phone has collected so much info that it needs a reboot.
By turning the phone off with regular intevalls, like at night, you wont get the 10 sec thingie since the phone the reboots when you turn it back on in the morning.

Well, more to the point, the 10 second thingy is basically a crash. It's like running a computer for weeks without rebooting. Eventually, you will get a system hang.
You don't need to turn it off every night (and you don't need alarms while it's off - because then it would have to be on!).
Just restart the phone once a week or so. Or, if you're running a lot of apps that are causing more frequent hangs, turn it off every night like the other poster suggested, but then just turn it right back on.

if you need to use the alarm only, then turn off the phone with flight mode ON. the alarm will still work.

I backup my P800 every Friday, which automatically reboots it. I rarely experience crashes and attribute that to the weekly reboots - plus Sman closing down the background applications when I engage the virtual flip.
Whilst I am on an older firmware, I read that the latest firmware (R2F) is more stable and thus reduces the frequency of crashes.
