i tried a thousand and one mac forums but none of them arnswear my problem, i got a G5 on OSx and the dam thing wont shut down or log out, if anyone knows anything about macs please help

Sounds like you've got a background program running that won't allow the shutdown/logout to complete.

With no obvious programs running, load up ~/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor and have a look if there's anything there that could be causing it.

If there is, try Quiting that process and see if it will shut down.

There's more you can try too, but try that first and let me know whats there.

Check your Library/StartupItems folder for things you don't want running. One of them may be the culprit.

Also, try repairing permissions on the starup disk with ~/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

In the left panel, click on the boot partition, in the First Aid tab click "Repair Disk Permissions".

That often sorts out 101 minor problems.

Yep, that's what Quitting a Process in Activity Monitor is the equivalent of on a Mac.

ok thanks for the replies ill try the above and let u know wat happens permissions are repaired on a fortnightly basis so thats ok it does sound like a background app i shall try and report back thanks

i take it u own a G4 if i send u my exported activity monitor list cld u see if there is anythin unussual

Yeah, if you can work out a way of getting the list into an easy readable form I'll compare it with mine. I tried exporting the list on my Mac, but it comes out as a .plist file which is impossible to read!

Maybe a few screengrabs of the window?

yer thats what ines comes out as but i can export it via omniviewer to a html or rich text doc what wld u prefere
