A friend of mine lost his phone in a bar and after waiting for a week (since the bar said it was best to wait) he was told nobody handed it in. So he went to his phone dealer (since he had insurance) and was given another phone. Two weeks later, the bar called in and said they found it behind a sofa. Now he's got two phones.
What should he do? Should he hand one back? Or can he just keep both? And if he DOES keep both, will they both work?

We're in the UK, and if I offered to buy his phone if it would work.
We didn't switch it on, because I thought it would be auto-locked somehow.

The phone will have been barred. You cannot make or recieve calls, neither can u send Text messages.
Barred phones are not much use in the UK. Just sell it for parts.

is there anyway of unbarring?
I'd love to take that phone off his hands.
I mean, I know it'll work OUT of the UK, but can you remove the barring?

He should keep both and find the "right" way to use them, lets say give the lost one to a family member if its not blocked. However he got a new one, donnow if the dealer did it blocked or not. Is it contract fone or unlocked? This message was posted from a T68i

depends what phone it is. i would not recommend it though. Its illegal. You can get 5 years in jail and a hefty fine.

Your friend has a replacement phone. The original handses is no longer theirs. To keep it is theft. If you take it you are in receipt of stolen goods. If you attempt to override the barring you commit a criminal offence. As 50 points out, you could be facing 5 years imprisonment. How lucky are you feeling? This message was posted from a T68i

not about luck.
If there was no bar placed on it in the first place then it wouldn't matter.

The phone was purchased with a contract but was paid for seperately. Its a P900. Unlocked.

of course none of this was planned and it just happened to be that he was left over with an extra phone.
If I wanted to do something extremely illegal, i would have faked a loss, wouldn't have asked, and gone to a forum that would have taught me how to remove a barring. This is why I'm asking.

Guess I'll just have to call myself and ask The Link.

edit:
Just had a thought though.
If someone finds something, they should hand it in to the authorities. There is a time period (1-2 weeks) until that person who handed it in, has the right to keep it. Keeping it then wouldn't be illegal. Just a thought.

i think its 30 days. check if the phone is barred first. No UK company like the Link is going to help you unbar a phone.

And if you hand the phone in to the police you have to give a full statement of the circumstances (including receiving a replacement). To fail to give a full statement is making a false statement. Making a false statement is a criminal offence. Basically, you're stuffed. This message was posted from a T68i

lol i study law, so I understand the concequences.
Why would I be stuffed?

I would do everything the legal way.

I think you are reading to much into this, or understanding me the wrong way.

I'm not asking to unbar the phone illegaly but in a Legal manner.
I'm asking if the company would allow me to keep the phone or if there was a method of getting the company itself to unbar it.

That is if it's barred anyway! Which I, myself, don't know yet!
