Hello,

I am contemplating getting a PowerBook running Mac OS X, but first I'd like to know how well Sony Ericsson P900 works with this operating system.

- I couldn't find a "PC Suite" software for OSX on the SE website, how does synchronisation work?
- What program do I use for storing contacts, tasks, appointments and notes on my Mac?
- Is there an Microsoft Outlook counterpart for an easy "all-in-one" storage solution (i.e. one app for all PIM features)?

Anything else you'd like to add? How does this compare to PC Suite?

Hello. The quick answer is yes. The P900 works perfectly with the Mac. Even better than with Windows. I am out right now but I will answer more later. Go buy your Mac. This message was posted from a S700

ON the mac us get a pre installed application called iSync. This is a wonderous little application that allows devices to be synchronised with the mac.

Currently the latest version of iSync, will allow you to sync via Bluetooth, cable or IR, but bluetooth is the best and simplest option (unless you use a Motorola phone, where you must use the USB lead)

If you go to http://www.apple.com/support/isync/ you can get all the info about the application.

It sync's the contacts with 'Address Book' (the mac address book strange enough! and iCal (the calander)

The complete list of currently supported devices is here
http://www.apple.com/isync/devices.html

but devices are added all the time, and even if they are not listed, most can still be made to work with a litttle patience. You can also transfer files back and forward using the Bluetooth File Exchange application in the mac.

enjoy

Only BT works with P900, don't bother with cable or infrared.. that goes with the majority of phones that iSync supports.. the cable will work with a minority of motorola phones..

se's sync over bluetooth works flawlessly. with iSync. contacts into Addressbook. appointments into iCal.
however, yr last question no-one has answered straight: there IS an app equivalent to Outlook called Entourage. Entourage 2004 works with Microsloth exchange servers, and is wonderful. it contains email/calendar/addressbook/project overview. HOWEVER, this app does NOT sync very well with ANY fone!
there are clunky two and three step workarounds that transfer most of yr data, but no one step easy solution.

here is what i can also say: se's bluetooth works so well with mac iSync that it is really like an apple written app. however, its really only that apple and se are both very standards based companies. in iSync and se's rendition of how calendar/contacts/notes, are transferred, se and apple are really in sync (sorry).

however, as i have said, iSync only syncs well with apple's own iCal and apple's own Addressbook. NOT with entourage.

the other thing you have notices is: there is no software that se makes that works to sync with apple over any cable (like usb cables). that is why you only find a cd or download offering only pc software. the great fit between apple and se fones relies on standards based bluetooth transmission, and in imlplementation of the calendar/contacts/notes type of bluetooth transmissable info.

i myself use entourage, i dont like Mail app in apple. it is not powerful enough for my needs. so i dont have synced contacts or appointments in entourage. i need to open and use iCal and addressbook (both of these apps are great. but they are not used or usable by entourage in the sense we are discussing here.

from this person, a mac fan, and an se fan, buy the powerbook and a bluetooth se fone. you will love the combination.

@all and Lundmark,

As a Mac user for about a 6 months I too had a problem at first with syncing a Mac and the P900. However, Apple finally came to the rescue and made the entries into the iSync modules that makes the world wonderful.

Now the good news. In his post Niji made a small mistake about the syncing capabilites between a Mac and Entourage. There is an application called GoBetween that is a conduit between iSync and Entourage. It works very well. go to www.pocketmac.net and read about it. I have been using it for 6 months and all my contacts are perfectly synced between my Mac, my s700, k700, P900 (soon to be sold), and my Palm Tungsten C. Never skips a beat. If you need more info, just PM me or drop me a mail and I will be more than happy to help you out.

Thanks for all the answers. Really helpfull!

I have a follow-up to one question though: If connecting a P900 by cable doesn't work, how do you do backups of the phone?

Being currently on the run, I expect to lose my phone one time or another (sadly as is), so taking backups using the backup program in the PC Suite is really significant.

What do you do?

I would also like to know how to eliminate duplicate items. Dupes occur sometimes, and I hate it.

The backups, i.e. contact and calendar info is stored on the Mac so if you ever need to format your phone, this information is readily avaible again. However, the user setting are long gone. Either you need to memorize them, like I did, write them down, like I did, or have the operators send you the setting again, like I did.

There maybe some third party software out there to perform backups but I am not aware of it.

Well, settings I can remember, but worse are the things stored internally, like savegames and application databases. Things that are changing continuously.
