i've done a search, but i keep coming up with "screen saver"s and stuff like that.
does anyone know if there is a program that can convert text messages to .txt files so that they can be saved to the computer? i had a similar program on my 7650.
its VERY annoying when looking for an old text message, as it keeps starting from the beggining when you exit a message
any help would be appreciated

Check out SMSChat. It has a function of exporting smses in .txt format, which can later be copied to PC. it'n not freeware, but it gives you a lot of options how to save smses:
You don't export sent and received smses separately. You can export them all in chronological order - either all the existing smses or by contact (you get a sort of chat - that's where the name comes from). If you like this perhaps you should consider that option as well.
There is also Desktop Message, but this one does not save them in .txt format, you need a desktop application installed on computer to be able to see the smses.
