> Strange cable connection problem - help

I have done a search but I didnt come up with much. I have an annoying problem with my p910i and connecting it to the computer via usb.
When I plug the phone to the cradle the phone connects fine - or so it looks. The connection icon says that my phone is connected and the little phone icon also appears in the taskbar. In all repects it looks connected and it even askes me whether I wish to back up my phone when I connect it. The problem is the desktop icon. This is the way by which I can browse the phones contents - a default icon placed there by the software. When I open it it shows an icon "not connected" with that question mark picture.
Has anyone come across this before? I would like to be able to move files from my pc to the phone etc but I cant get that far.
I have tried removing the usb cable and also deactivating the usb in connection properties then enabling it again. Still no go.
I am going to try uninstalling all the software and then restarting - then installing the software again to see if that resolves the problem.
I dont have any firewall. There is a virus checker but Im not sure that will make a difference. I will try disabling that also.
It just seems strange that it appears connected but I cannot browse the phone contents.
