Can Smarmovie format movies be played in any way on my p900, and if not why do some of you put files in smartmovie format on this forum?

There really is no SM format. Technically the files are prepared in a format (ie XViD,Avi) that which SM is capable of playing. The P900 is compatible with the SM player as listed on the SM manufacturer's website:

SmartMovie.
