Passengers wanting to skip airport queues will be able to check in for flights using their mobile phone beginning next year, two European firms set to offer the service announced on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

"German manufacturer Siemens and air transport-related information technology firm SITA have teamed to develop the service, which uses GPRS, or general packet radio service, a speedy system for sending information to mobile phones.

Passengers can check in, change seats, check times and receive details for dropping off baggage using their phones.

The system is expected to help alleviate airport congestion, the firms said in a statement.

This doesn't seem to be anything new as I was using the British Airways WAP for check-in, flight times, arrivals and departures etc for quite a while until they stopped their WAP service completely late last year (as well as stopping telephone check-in).

as I said, BA have stopped their WAP services completely but it worked pretty much like the online check-in works now where you select your flight or enter your booking reference etc. It was very nice and handy if you were away from the PC. it was wap.britishairways.com but that no longer works and just gives a message saying

Unfortunately thus service is no longer available- please visiti http://www.ba.com using a web browser for mobile services

I just did a bit of research tere and found this page but the one thing you cannot do is check-in
