i'd like to know if these shell apps (tracker, handyday etc.) drain much more power and whether they lower the performance by using more ram and slowing the speed of loading and running apps. also, which shell apps do you guys recommend?

Yes, any software you install and run will produce more load on the processor and use memory to function, in turn using more battery life. In my opinion, most apps will use a trivial amount of resources though.

I don't have any software recommendations though.

@whot

Any applications you have running will invariably put a larger strain on the abttery and use up more system resources. Use those applications that you need to have running and use SMan to close the rest.

ok..understood .now my question is does these programs take up a substantial amount of memory to make the phone noticably slower/ more battery drain?
