I've seen that a couple of times, restart the phone & it will return to normal.
I'd like to know what causes this though

the handwriting recognition has stopped on mine too... well, could be the fact that there is a HUGE crack right down the middle of the screen!

Hi guys, I had this issue for the past 1 damn year on both my P900 and even my brand new P910i. If any of you continue to use your P900/P910i when this happens, you will soon be prompted "Unexpected End of File" when you launch a new app. Been testing all this while and finally confirmed YESTERDAY (19 Nov 04) that the cause of this issue is in fact due to CiCJot Pro hunged after sometime (3 days max for me), when using my P900/P910i and left it turned ON 24/7. SE in my country replaced a brand new P900 for me just a couple of months back cos they do not know what causes it but still the replaced P900 has the same old issue as the older P900.

I really needed everyone here with this issue to call up your local SE support and tell them about this issue, cos my local SE support claims they had NEVER heard of this issue and mine is an isolated case... worse of all is, at least 10 other people I knew in my local community are facing this exact same issue too Below are the steps to show how to reproduce this handwriting recognition suddenly gone missing issue. Note that tentatively to solve this issue is to "DISABLE" CiCJot Pro in Control Panel-->Text Input-->Primary Text input method and set it to NON. By doing so and just use the virtual keyboard (what a pain!!!), I had been using my P910i in Flip Removed mode for more than a week without having to reboot my phone.

1. Flip Removed for P900/P910i

2. Use NO other text input method other than CIC Jot Pro (Handwriting input) for all text entries, such as Calendar, Tasks, Jotter, SMS, MMS, e-mails, etc

3. For faster results, keep using handwriting input frequently (every half hour or so) for the next few days, about 8 hrs per day (this is to simulate a normal usage for any office executive)

4. After 3 - 6 days on average, when the issue occurred, you will realised that all of a sudden, you cannot write anything on the screen and the "
5. When this happens, even the virtual keyboard will not be working as well

6. If you have taskman or Tracker, you will realise that for a P910i, your free memory will still be around 16MB - 18MB when this happens, depending on how many apps you had lauched and stays in the background

7. Goto Control Panel-->Text Input and you will realise that "Primary Input Method" has suddenly been set to "NON"

8. Try tapping on "default" or manually choose back "Cic Jot Pro" will immediately result in "NOT ENOUGH MEMORY"... 18MB is not enough to "re-launch" CiC Jot Pro???

9. The "Unexpected End of File" will soon follow suit after this issue happens, however, this is really dependant on your... LUCK, as to when it will start occuring, cos usually when the handwriting input has gone missing, I will immediately reboot the phone before the unexpected end of file starts popping up else I cannot perform any of point "2" stated above

After almost one year of troubleshooting, I've come to the conclusion that it's really got something to do between the CiCJot Pro and and electronic keypad of P900/P910i. The P800 using the mechanical keypad does not have this issue at all and if the Triangle of Death did not happen, my old P800 can last for more than one month w/o any reboots whatsoever.

Just last Saturday (13th Nov 04), I've made up my mind to go into Control Panel-->Text Input and select "NON" for primary text input method, to completely stop using Handwriting recognition, and depended solely on the virtual keypad (and what I pain I must say on this...). Guess what, after 7 days, my P910i is still working fine thus far, and I had already broken my own record as both my P900/P910i never lasted more than 3 days based on my own usage with the CiCJot Pro ON.

Admins/Moderators/Whoever has contacts with SE engineers... PLEASE PLESAE assist to revert this thread to them cos the P900/P910i has been marketed as a Symbian device with HANDWRITING INPUT which is supposed to be an advantage over Nokia S60 range of phones. If this feature is so crippled and buggy, they might as well remove it completely and just sell S60 based phones and stop cheating customers about this "FEATURE"!!

Do u mean that this occurs to heavy use of the screen or a bug in the software, I mean is it hardware related or software ???
and is it inevitable for all users who use this method of input ???

Hi,

I am not sure if it's h/w only, s/w only or a combination of both, but from experiences with P800 (which uses only a non electronic keypad), which does not have this issue at all tells me it could be a combination of both. Btw, I have always used my phone w/o flip since P800.

The issue will definitely happen to any English P900/P910i (Chinese P900 seems alright thus far) user with the flip removed, and rely heavily on the CiC Jot Pro for all text inputs, and of course he/she must leave the phone ON 24/7 w/o rebooting at all and I can guarantee that between 3 - 6 days (depending on how heavy the user is on the Jot Pro) this issue will definitely happen

And oh, it's not that P900/P910i with Flip ON will not have this issue, just that it will take much longer for this to happen, cos with Flip ON, most if not all users will tend to use the electronic keypad heavily as opposed to flip removed users, who's only decent text input method is the Jot Pro, cos the virtual keypad is too small for comfort. Please don't suggest PopOnTop/Seethru or EziTap cos these cost $$$ and by default, what SE provides MUST WORK, else they shouldn't be selling these devices with Handwriting recognition and market this as a feature...

Below are more links to other threads complaining about the same issues, but just that no one really knows for sure what's the real problem and I really don't know why people are happy to be forced to reboot their extremely expensive phone every 3 - 6 days and take that as a solution I really don't understand why SE had not been made known about it WE've tried numerous ways such as using Sman to flush memory, using X for UIQ etc, etc but these can only help to last a max of 1 day more and then suddenly "Unexpected End of file" pops up and all is in vain, and only a reboot can solve it when this message appears

I sometimes get this problem on my p900 when the black arrow disappears and cant use handwriting. I also get an 'unexpected end of file message' when this happens. I just reboot the phone and its back to normal. Its simple and it works so il just stick with this method

Hi dekesh,

do you know even an old 338/688/T10/T18/T28/T39 can last up to weeks/months w/o having to reboot? Ok let's be fairer, my old P800 can last up more than a month w/o rebooting. My T610 and K700 also last almost 2 months w/o needing to reboot... you mean to say SE LATEST and the GREATEST and the MOST EXPENSIVE PHONE can only last a few days before you die die require to reboot?

Further to that, anyone ever realises that Symbain OS takes ages to boot up as compared to generic Ericsson OS phones such as T610/T630/K700? And it ain't a joy at times of emergencies where every sec counts, such as if you are working in a Financial Institution whereby millions can be lost within a matter of 1 min!
