Like the header says, how do they manage to give you the unlock code for the phone with you providing the imei? Is it because they are the ones who put the lock in the first place? Or do they have some unlocker generator?

It's easy.
Your unlock code is a calculation of your MNC + IMEI. They locked your mobile phone with a code. so, if you type in the code they had, you can unlock it.

Guess what, you are on vodafone network. So it is a piece of cake for them to find out what your imei is. If you wap, why do you only see content aviable only for your phone and sometimes even says, you use a sony-ericsson T610 or Nokia 6230? It's because of your imei.

So surely if thats the case someone must be able to offer this facility instead of having to go down the Total Server route?

Do I detect someone making an obvious attempt to get their post count up?

btw I thought that the remote unlocking was impossible with SEs, as far as I know they need a data cable/terminator dongle and specialist software, you can't unlock 'Nokia' style with an unlocking programme sadly!
