I didnt understand the majority of your message, but for me a key selling point of MEND is that the UK authorites have recognised this an as official database of products and their registered owners.
Imagine if you will:
Your phone gets nicked by a pikey theif git, they are pulled over and searched a while later and your/their phone discovered. The police will then cross check that IMEI on the MEND database and if your name comes up as the registered owner, you will be contacted and informed of the discovery.
Tell me how that process can happen if you've written down all your IMEI details on the back of a fag packet in your bedroom?

@frontman: why not go the other way? I keep my IMEI under my pillow until my phone gets lost, THEN I informī the police or whosoever and then the number can be stored and checked.. Itīs just my reluctance that everybody is eager to provide service combined with building complete databases of your belongings, preferences and behaviours..

I see what you're trying to avoid, another data collecting marketing firm just looking to spam you, but even with my equally scpetical mind, I fail to see whay this shouldnt be done.
If you have the patience and energy to call round numerous police forces when your mobile gets nicked and then encourage them to take your details and check on all their local arrests then good on ya.. this way, theres a recognised, official approved database in existence that the police forces across the country all use centrally to identify the owners of stolen items.
Plus its more credible. My stuff has been listed on their for ages now so if it suddenly turns up in someone elses hands, its non debatable as to whom it belongs. Basically mate, your way is how its always been. Stuff gets nicked and then you report it. Its all fairly understandable, but to me this system seems like a well thought out, easily accessible and reliable method of proving legal ownership and its there ready, waiting for the police to access it with no further inconvenience to you as a victim of crime. Dont use it if you dont want to, its not obligatory... its just there to help.
Btw, I have been listed on there for over a year, never had anything nicked yet, but also I havent received any spam or advertising either as a result. I rate them.
