As most of you already know, I'll be flying in less than 3 days now. I want to carry my hard disc (yes just the hard disc, not the whole PC) with me by hand. I have been told that the electromagnetic fields from the baggage scanners will mess it up. Do you think this is true?

i think you can carry it with you ...everyday computers peripherals fly with airplanes.

But, because I'm carrying it by hand, there is less protection from electromagnetic fields than when putting it in the cargo?

I carried my Laptop/Notebook plenty of times onto planes without problems.
Although, I have no idea how strict they'd be in searching your luggage. If it's anything like Amsterdam (Which has probably the worst security in the world), then you should be fine

you can go and ask for an antistatic plastic (used) hard disk bag in a computer shop ...

My hard disc didn't come with an antistatic bag. It came with a plastic box. Could that be antistatic?

The box has this symbol on it:
Is that the antistatic symbol?

yes thats an antistatic symbol! you can use that bag to carry your hard-disk. Make sure you tell them when they are scanning it - and aslo if you are passing through the magnetic field.
