Is it possible to use the P910 serial port to configure other equipment such as the serial port on a Cisco router. There is a serial cable (the DRS-11) which seems to have the requisite control lines. Is there any software that can do this? Is the phone capable of doing this.

I asked the makers of NewDialin 800 if there software could do this and they answered that the serial port is not accessable from software and they are looking at doing this via a bluetooth serial dongle. Does anyone know if this is correct, or is anyone has software that can do it even if via a bluetooth serial dongle?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

In truth I don't care at all about configuring cisco routers but it is something that most people would understand. What I want to do is configure a serial VT100 port using the phone so that I don't have to lug a notebook computer 40 metres off the ground up a mobile transmission tower. My phone can go up in my pocket a notebook I have to pully up from the ground which means I not only have to climb the tower I also have to set up a rope, hoist the unit, find enought realestate at the top of the tower to put it on without it dropping 40 metres to it's death......

You get the picture no doubt.

Don't assume that just because you don't need the feature someone else doesn't

A treo 600 phone can do this. A Palm Pilot can do this. The SE P910 has a serial port the question is can you access it from the P910 out to another device or only from a PC onto the P910

I do not have a solution, but I would find this useful too.

Well it seems like a software limitation to me considering all the hardware needed is in place, all you need to do is gather up some programmers and get them to do make it.
Kinda off topic but Its a lot like this other project I want someone to work on which will turn the p900 into a bluetooth system in which the computer will stream audio over bluetooth to the phone which can be connected to any speaker system through the audio jack thus creating a wireless audio player for your home just like the expensive ones on tech shops.

Considering how many programmers are spending time producing completely pointless programmes for turning on the backlight, parking meter alarms etc, surely someone could have a go at this? Candidate for a SMAN module?

Here is the best solution I have come up with.

Forget the P910 for this and go buy a cheak 2nd hand palm pilot off ebay. I got one for AUD 48. I then spent an additional USD 30 on the Online software and I have my fully portable VT-100 terminal that I can take up very high towers and if I do happen to drop it I'm not up for USD750 for another P910.

A term program for the P9XX would be kicka$$! I rarely have to configure routers at 40metres but it would be nice to log into a dead Sun machine over serial with my phone. Not to mention Geek factor.
