Reuters news:
DJ Deutsche Telekom To Start Multimedia Messaging From July
BERLIN (Dow Jones)--Deutsche Telekom AG (DT) said Friday that it will start multimedia messaging services in Germany from July 1, offering the service free for a month and subsidizing handsets to drum up custom.
European telephone operators are banking on MMS to kick-start the mobile data market, giving consumers a taste of third-generation wireless services and a much-needed boost to revenues for the likes of Deutsche Telekom.
T-Mobile International AG, the wireless unit of Germany's biggest telephone company, said it will introduce fees at the start of August.
Sending an MMS of up to 30 kilobytes - the equivalent of a small picture with some text - will cost EUR0.39. The cost rises to EUR0.99 for up to 100 kilobytes, the size needed to send CD-quality music or short videos.
Consumers wishing to send multimedia messages have to splash out on special handsets.
T-Mobile's contract customers can buy the T68i phone, made by a venture of Sony Corp. and Ericsson, for EUR299.95.
The Bonn-based company also will offer the Nokia 7650, the Nokia Corp. handset with a built-in camera, for EUR349.95.
By contrast, Telecom Italia Mobile SpA (I.TIM), which won't subsidize the Nokia 7650, will charge EUR699.
