I'm currently using an iPAQ hx4700 (as shown in the pic below) and am always looking for new software and hardware to play with and this one caught my eye this morning

BumbleBee™ is a precision calibrated spectrum analyzer that interfaces with HP’s iPAQ® PocketPC®. The handheld receiver measures 4 distinct wireless bands: 900 MHz, 2.4-2.5 GHz, 5.1-5.5 GHz & 5.5-5.9 GHz. Bumble Bee™ allows the user to capture, display and record each of these bands for network installation, coverage and interference analysis. The iPAQ’s touch screen allows field engineers to tap on points of interest in the waveform and “zoom” in for further analysis. Advanced spectrum analysis features include 3 WAVEFORM TRACES, PEAK HOLD, PEAK SEARCH, and user selectable PACKET / INTERFERENCE TRIGGERS. Bumble Bee™ allows for on-the-fly switching of bands for realtime spectral analysis of many wireless standards including RFID, 802.11(b,a,g & Bluetooth) and cordless phones/video. Bumble Bee™ does the job of multiple wireless test instruments all in the palm of your hand.

now... if I only new what the hell any of that meant I'd probably want one! looks radical anyway!

doesnt that just measure and analyze different wireless signals (wifi, bt, radio waves, etc) and tell you the strengths and all the other technical data?

i may be wrong but if thats what it is its just a machine to scan the strength of your recpetion and wifi networks

@masseur:

Here is one use for the Bumblebee:

You live in Norway where property for houses is divided into about 1000 square meter parcels (make an internal image of how closely the houses are situated). You have just bought yourself a WLAN base station and wireless cards for all your PC's. You install everything and connect to the internet. But no matter which WiFi channel (1-11 - let's assume you bought your equipment in America) you choose, the indicator for link quality on your PC shows 20-30%. Signal level is 90%, so something else must be on the air alongside your base station.

You climb onto the roof of your house, sit down and whip out your Bumblebee-equipped iPaq. Turning it on, and tuning in to the 2.5GHz band, you look at the display and soon identify WiFi signals on channels 3, 6, 9 and 11 - at different power levels.

You know that the 11b and 11g channels are spaced 5MHz apart, but that each channel occupies about 24MHz, so that only channels 1, 6 and 11 are non-overlapping.

You disconnect the Bumblebee antenna, and attach the directional antenna. You select WiFi channel 3 on the Bumblebee, and slowly turn the device around. You get a signal power level peak in the direction of the Smiths three houses down the road. You do the same procedure for channels 6, 9 and 11, and you have identified all your interfering neighbours.

Now you can start planning how to dole out the non-overlapping channels to your neighbours and yourself. Neighbours who can't hear eachother can occupy the same channel. You might have to visit each of your neighbours, Bumblebee in hand, and listen for other neighbours' signal. That will get you a lot of geeky credibility...
