I recall the P910's IMEI is in a different format than the P900's. However, I read that flashing the P900 with the latest firmware upgrades the IMEI to the new format.

Is this true?

No. IMEI is a ID number assigned to the hardware.

Firmware is basically software & hence cannot affect the ID of the hardware

you'll be ok with it.

as for firmware/IMEI hardware...they are all software on different chips. Since on SE phones the IMEI seems to be storeed in a similar area to the AVR and ARM CPU's of the phone, it can be changed.

Nokia on the other hand, is MUCH harder. because they put the IMEI info on what's called a UEM chip that is only writable once. So changing IMEI on nokias requires you to take out the UEM chip, and solder in a new one and program it to the IMEI you want. such a procedure is also very difficult to conceal so nokias with changed IMEI/UEM chips are much more easily identified; whereas with SE and others where it can be done via software, it is next to impossible to detect.
