Hi,

In my P900, I have both WAP accounts and Internet Accounts. I would like to know the difference. Browsing the web seems to work alright without a WAP account, using only the Internet account.

Can somebody explain this to me?

wap gateway & internet gateways are different - usually the wap gateway has a kb limit.

internet is used for email accounts & internet browsers

@lundmark. With a wap acount, you can only access wap/mobile sites. Like wapchimp said, internet accounts allow you to use POP/IMAP mail clients, Web browsers & other 3rd party internet utilities like AvantGo, messengers, FTP clients etc

OK, thanks. Now, on a smartphone able to browse real websites, is a WAP account needed?

I found that browsing seemed to work alright with only an Internet account, but I had to configure a special WAP account for accessing my Internet bank, probably for safety reasons.

What you can and can't do with your WAP-account versus your Internet account is different from operator to operator.
Also some operators have different ways of blocking different kinds of traffic for those accounts, meaning that they can be more or less strict.

DeLa's right. For example, even though I have only a gprs wap account on my p800, using the built-in browser I can still browse web pages. But cant use Opera, POP mail or other internet utilities, as those require a separate gprs internet account.

But using CSD (normal gsm data call), I am able to use everyone of those utilities (built-in or 3rd party).

To make a long story short; most operators have the IP traffic go through a a WAP gateway if you use operator provoided "WAP account".

Older phones using WAP1.x standards required this account and WAP gateway to get the correct translation of the HTTP data to/from the internet. Newer WAP2 phones does not require a WAP gateway since they can talk HTTP directly(or actually a variant of HTTP).

A WAP gateway is also used to deliver Push content, which you can't receive if you haven't configured a WAP gateway. The WAP gateway will usually also know "who you are", and hence it can handle services that require some sort of authentication.

The best value for yourself in going through a WAP gateway is that it will make all DNS lookups for you, saving you some bandwith and increase your surfing speed a little bit:)
