I have an Orange-branded P910i have accidentally discovered a way of removing the Orange homescreen.

I downloaded and installed the new SonyEricsson Desktop application from:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]1&pid=10183&fid=10339&esi=true

I uninstalled it and discovered that the Orange homescreen hadn't reappeared to replace it as expected! Previously Tracker wouldn't run on "flip-open" without my using KeyMapper as well, but it now works correctly.

Also, in the Application shortcuts previously the first shortcut was set to the Orange homescreen and wasn't selectable. Its now available and so I have been able to set it to another application.

I'm assuming that if I wanted to get the Orange homescreen back again I would need to do a master reset.

Can anyone else confirm this?

this is a great find. I am guessing that Sman will work correctly now, without the nasty orange frontpage. Gonna try it now.

I forgot that I'd renamed the homescreen file ages ago while I'd been trying to find a way of disabling the homescreen application. I've just been running some tests and have discovered the following:

1. You need to rename the homescreen file before you install the SE Desktop program. The file is in c:\system\Autostart. I renamed the "homescreen.ast" file to "homescreen.xast", then ran the install for SE Desktop.
2. Then when you uninstall SE Desktop you should find that the old homescreen doesn't run.
3. The application shortcut for the homescreen will be replaced with the "messages" icon.

NOTE: Don't be tempted to change the name of the homescreen file back to its original - if you do you'll find that the old homescreen will appear the next time you turn the phone off and switch it on again, and that you won't be able to remove it without going through steps 1 and 2 again..

OP: All good stuff -- thanks very much.

But what of the SE desktop itself -- were you not tempted to dabble? If so, what's your verdict? Worthwhile?

Its a good app, but I already own Tracker and Powerday. My main problem used to be that I wasn't able to get either app to display when I opened the flip on my phone. I ended up buying Keymapper, which is able to force applications to run when the flip is opened. While this works, there was a time delay because the homescreen loaded first, immediately followed by the "flip-open" app specified in Keymapper. Now Tracker loads quite quickly.

I've been playing around with SE Desktop on and off as well - I'm hoping that SE will release a version that can be used when the flip is closed.

Great news... I'll try this and see if I can get the same experience with my T-Mobile p910. I was really wasn't very impressed with the desktop... It just made accessing things less efficient!

I'll post up a reply once I give this a go.

I did something similar - I flashed my Orange P910i with generic firmware and then, to my horror, the Orange-ness (complete with fully-dysfunctional Homescreen!) reappeared when I restored my backup from the pre-flashed phone. I then deleted all the Homescreen files I could find in ProfiExplorer (in my desperation) and when I restarted had a blank icon where the Homescreen had been, which could not be re-mapped to anything else - it was blocked out in Control Panel. So, I had a useless shortcut there until Desktop appeared, I installed, and it took the place of the previously blank icon! Unfortunately, mine did not become configurable like yours, Sparky.
