I would guess it would be far cheaper because it's only 160 bytes of data.

I can't do it, it just says I'm barred from doing so when I try

yes it does. SMS sent over GPRS is sent faster to the SMSC. but in our case, we still get charged for every SMS sent whether via GPRS or standard GSM channel.

SMS is 150 bytes, 7 bits by letter (less in unicode) plus headers.

(tell me if i am wrong somewhere)

there are 2 types of channel in standard GSM :
Full speed (9600bps), and low speed (1200bps).

In most of case, operator use low speed channel for indication messages (SMS, renew of LAC, start of call...)
so send of one sms take about 3-4 secondes.

SMS send trough GPRS are send quickly (at about 13kbps),
BUT you need to be connected to GPRS,
if you are not connect, tou need to connect (10 seconds) and send sms.

So... sending by GPRS is quickly only when you send very long sms (6 or more for example).

PS : sorry for my bad English
PPS : in France, the only BTS who use full speed channel for indication messages, are in TGV way, when you roll sometimes at 340km/h (212Miles per hour), you need to change emmetor very quickly, everytime.

sorry, am not familiar with the details of which channel is used by my SP to send SMS over regular GSM channels. But in my experience, SMS is sent much faster when I choose SMS over GPRS.

It's possible too, that my SP is using the slower channel 1200bps to communicate, but i can't say for sure.
