I see that the P910 R3A04 (Maintenance Release 2) is available on Orange now (CDA162006/5). Not too bad a wait, compared to firmware versions for the P900 earlier this year. Two questions:

(a) Have you unbranded your Orange phone with generic firmware? If so, what does this firmware upgrade do for you?

(b) Have you installed the SE Desktop BEFORE updating your firmware? If so, what is the impact on the desktop - do you have to reinstall it? I ask because "Release of SEM Desktop" was listed in the release notes of the MR2 firmware release - does that mean it is not supported by older firmware?

Hi Howard,

I have indeed flashed my phone with generic FW, and am also pleasantly surprised, though it is now irrelevant to me, at the speed with which the Orange FW MR2 has followed the generic version. My thinking was that the SEUS would be useless to me (as an Orange P910i owner) as they were so slow releasing updates, so I might as well go unbranded and have to go to a service centre (or just downstairs to the nice man in Repairs! ) when I want an update. It seems I may have been a little hasty, especially since the Homescreen issue (my other bugbear) has now been solved with SEM Desktop. My experiences with this are detailed here:

Removal of Homescreen Thread

On balance, I think I would still do the flash (I will unlock when I get round to it) as there are some irregularities I can do without on the Orange FW, such as the "software" IMEI, beginning 147... and detailed here:

P910i IMEI Identity Crisis!

Also, who can say how long it will take them to release the next update, next time there is one. Have to say I have noticed no functional improvements since the flash to CDA 162005/3 and R3A04, but just prefer non-Orange FW. However, my restore has brought back much of the Orangeness, much to my discontent I still have Backup, the Wizards and originally my Homescreen, so anyone who is intending on debranding their handset should be aware that some of this will restore with the rest of your backup!

Hope that answers some of your questions,

Dave

Do you have to go through Orange for this, or is it available at the SE site?

And a general Q -- will I lose my installed programs like Sman and Keymapper if I do the upgrade?

Thanks.

@scormie

You need to backup everything first, and you should not then lose any apps. You can upgrade from the SEUS (Update Service) online, and do not need to go to Orange.

The only thing to bear in mind is that when I first used the Update Service with my Orange P910i, when they had just released it for the 910i, my firmware did not change, but the IMEI displayed by certain software (see thread linked to below) changed after the upgrade, and I had to obtain new reg codes for Tracker, eZItap and Magic Profiles Pro/Magic Launcher.

You should be alright with sman (which is freeware anyway) - and I don't think the codes change for Epocware software (like KeyMapper).

Cheers,

Dave
