Having read numerous threads on the matter, I decided to call CPW to ask about having my phone flushed of its Vodafone Firmware. THey had not one drop of a clue what I was talking about?! I didnt really know how to explain it either. One of them told me that removing network markings from a phone is illegal!? Whats all that about?!

Anyway, can someone confirm for me that CPW CAN offer this service, and could you please tell me what I should call the process of removing branded firmware? Please?

Lastly, could you offer your suggestions as to whether I should actually bother getting it done? I have no real reason to, just thinking ..why not?!

@frontman

I can confirm that the official line is that CPW do NOT offer this service, although there appear to be many instances of people successfully duping them into doing it, under the guise of having reduced functionality on their branded handsets.

The reason that they do not is twofold:

Non-symbian handsets can develop problems when being flashed with generic firmware, if they have previously had branded firmware, and CPW do not differentiate between flashing symbian and non-symbian handsets.

More significantly, the networks do not approve of this practice, so it is along the same lines as unlocking, far from illegal but not a practice in which CPW involve themselves.

There are, however, plenty of independent dealers that seem less concerned about the ethics and perfectly happy to take your money, so I would recommend trying one of them.

@vanquish

They will update firmware on all phones, where there is a reason for doing so, and where it does not involve flashing branded with generic or vice-versa. Proof of warranty must be supplied to enable it to be done for free. However, for the handsets that can use SEUS, there is little point in going via CPW, as they will only have the same versions as are available on the website.

I think that the employees at phone shops should have a wide knowledge on mobile phones, most of them don't even know any thing about mobiles. They p*** me off, lol.

Two/three questions -
1.If I want to get my K700i flashed with generic firmware (From orange) because the phone has BT problems will they do it for free? I got it from amazon, will that be a problem?
2.If I do get it flashed, will I lose all of my pics,vids, etc.?

Cheers

I just want to confirm what dave is saying.

It's not company policy to flash a branded phone with generic firmware. Anyone that has had that done has had it done as a good will gesture so to speak. It's not that CPW don't have the ability to do it, it's because the networks don't let the engineers do it. Believe me, it would make CPWs life so much easier if we didn't have to worry about branded handsets, afterall that means we could just stock 1 type of k700 rather than a generic version, a voda, orange & t-mobile version.

So to reiterate, while some express repair centres will flash a branded handset with generic firmware it is in no way a guarentee, or CPWs obligation to do so.

In reply to jontyf, CPW will flash the phone happily providing you have a proof of purchase (An invoice from amazon for instance), but will only update it with the Orange firmware
