So I bought a P910i about a week ago and overall am quite pleased with it. The reason I got it compared to other models (I was tempted by the PDA2K) was I needed a pda/phone that worked well AS A PHONE, for one-handed operation.

I run both macs and pcs, but the phone has to work mainly with the PC. I managed to transfer the contacts from my old Nokia 6100 to Outlook ok. I don't like Outlook at all, and would much rather use something like Palm Desktop, but it seems we have little choice. I then managed to sync with the P910i but have come across some problems:

1. Many of my contacts from my Nokia had multiple (2 to 5) cellphone numbers because I have colleagues who travel extensively and use multiple local SIMs. On the nokia you could have lots of cellphone numbers under one contact. But with the P910/Outlook combination it is very limited. The only way I have managed to get most (not all) of the numbers over to the phone and stay in sync is to put some of them down as other categories like work number, fax number etc in Outlook... The problem is the P910 won't then let me send an sms to these numbers from the Contacts list. I really don't want to have to create a separate contact for each number...

2. Is Lotus Notes any better at this than Outlook, or is it a phone limitation? Before this, I'd never used either, and used Palm Desktop instead.

3. When I sync, the category of the number (cell, work, fax, home) doesn't always seem to translate properly between Outlook and the phone.

4. Is there any better PIM that I can use? For email I use Thunderbird, and previously have used Palm Desktop, but a search of the web hasn't turned up any solutions to syncing with these.

5. I have other existing contacts on a Palm Desktop database (but no palm anymore) and others in my Thunderbird Address Book. How can I get these across? I tried exporting a vCard from Palm and importing into Outlook, but nothing came across.

6. I read lots about SyncML and wonder if a solution on these lines would be better, but I can't seem to find any user-friendly solution to actually do this for the end-user, it's all enterprise stuff.

7. Why is synchronisation and transferring files to/from the phone so unbelievably slow? It seems way slower than the actual communication speed of usb/infra-red/bluetooth.

I'm pretty tech-savvy generally, but have come to a dead-end regarding solutions to this, so any help would be much appreciated,

Cheers,

Ben

I can only speak for points 1, 3, and 7 of your observations but you seem to be mainly having problems with synching contacts.

As for synching multiple mobile numbers, I just tried a "Test" contact with five work mobile numbers. They all synched flawlessly between my P900 and my Mac (contacts & calendar items) so I doubt it's any less for the P910i.

One thing I found about mobile phones is that they don't seem to synch properly with v3.0 Vcard files. You might want to check Outlook or any PIM you're using to see how you can set the default format to v2.1 or something.

The whole synching process takes no more than a minute or two every time. Only the first time, when a major transfer of data is involved, it took a little more. But that was almost a year ago.

You obviously need to spend a little more time with your mobile and find out how to best setup this whole synching process.
