Can a contract sim be changed by the operators to PAYG ?

I dont know how contract works in UK, but in Sweden it is like this:
There is bounded ones for 12 or 24 months and unbounded ones. If u have an unbounded u can change it to PAYG without changing SIM.

Yeah its mainly 12months in uk...i just wanted to make sure that people knew that it was possible after the contract is ended and not any time
