Samsung Electronics said Wednesday that it would excuse itself from international mobile phone contests in a bid to hinder rivals from copying its innovative handsets.
The world's third largest cell phone manufacturer said that product design has rapidly emerged as a key purchase factor for consumers, and the company made the decision to prevent competitors from gaining an unfair advantage by copying its products.
By keeping its state-of-the-art designs under wraps, the company intends not only to block copy-cat products and patent theft, but also to occupy a larger market share.
In accordance with this decision, Samsung Electronics plans to participate in the International Consumer Electronics Show in the United States next year, but only unveil a select few products in the design contest.

I read somewhere (poss The Register), that Samsung had also banned all employees from possessing cam phones on site in a bid to prevent photos of new products being smuggled out.

very funny.
samsung uses platform and software license from ericsson and nokia.
and then they want to keep there designs for themselfs.
while most other brands copy each others design.
this could end up into a war on design rights. its very sad that samsung does this. i only liked them for there designs, cause thats all a samsung is good for, but this makes it complete.
samsung is a full no for me. all there products should be left in stores!
how's with me!

This sounds unbelievably stupid. Design of all samsung clamshell phones is copied from motorola, so maybe one day samsung will sue motorola for having the same design.

@ blayv: Just maybe, like the clam was all their idea in the first place. For all I care, Samsung can keep whatever designs they come up with to themselves. Their phones are f little use to me. FCOL, if someone gave me a Samsung as a gift, I would promptly sell it and get something more useful.

Samsung Design???
LOL...!!!
What's the good in Samsung design?
Especially for Clamshell.
All clamshell phones are look almost the same.
You open the flip and the look inside is no improvement at all...!!!
IMO the worse design in phone is clamshell especially for Samsung, LG, Nokia, Motorola, and SE too for Zxxx...
Why all local magazines in my country always said that clamshell design related to fashion and high-end user?
What do you say???
