I would like to know your feedback on Intel Celeron. I've always purchased the Pentium processors but this time I'm helping my uncle buy a new computer and Celeron sure are cheaper. I haven't heard many good things about the Celeron performance but my uncle is by no means a power-user so I thought it might be enough for him. He mostly surfs online, emails, and prints out digital images.

What do you guys think? Should he pay the extra for Pentium or is Celeron good enough?

Thanks!

Depends on his usage, if your uncle has some kids and they decide to play games and stuff they're going to be disappointed with a celeron

But if his usage is limited to what u said, i guess a celeron would be ok, taking into account its cost

having used a celeron computer i can say that big multimedia apps like adobe photoshop, latest games etc wouldnt work fast enough even with good h/w

Thanks, that is what I expected. I might just have him get Pentium to be on the safe side. Thanks!

@ama:

If cost is a concern why not look at an AMD processor?
In most cases you'll certainly give it enough power to last a fair time and modern games apps won't mind either.

Doesn't need ot be one of their 64 bit chips to perform well either.

Iīd say itīs a waste of money unless you use Autocad, 3DStudio Max or play all the latest games..
I have a P4 3.0 HT CPU in my box and a friend of mine is running an almost identical setup except he has the Celeron 2,6 and in everyday use i donīt think i could pass "the Pepsi challenge" between the two

go for pentium at any time,it has more cache than celeron nd i think celerons come only in 533fsb (not sure) ,so go for pentium with 800mhz fsb ,there will be good gains in all apps

I would agree with @gigs suggestion of AMD, I'd suggest Athlon - it's cheaper and in some cases more stable than a Pentium of the same speed. Celerons are slow and hangs up a lot even on simple applications if you keep it running for a long time or you open many applications or windows at the same time.

AMD for sure, extremely good quality and half the price of them overpriced pentiums. Get the fastest AMD and it's still cheaper than the pentiums

Wanna put amd under the hood them i will suggest the fastest sempron processor with a good motherboard supporting ddr400 memory, sata hdd and 8x agp. This combination should be future proof for some time to come and really good value for money as well as being cheaper than pentium without any sacrifice in quality. Use 256 mb ram and win xp for complete peace of mind. This message was posted from a T630
