It's a money-making-ploy by Vodafone to 'encourage' customers to buy ringtones from Vodafone Live!
I'm not sure you can get around it, but you can try by downloading SE's DRM Packager:
http://developer.sonyericsson.com/getDocument.do?docId=65056
You have to register, but it's free.

@memzee i think u will find that ur money making comment is incorrect.
Vodafone had to make the choice not to allow mp3s as ringtones because if they allowed it the major music companies would not allow vodafone to sell its music... its all down to COPYRIGHT issues.
Its one of the biggest features on vodafone live and we r the only network to offer this service... Trust me if any of the other networks offer it then their fones wont b able to have them as ringtones either....

Sorry, but if vodafone didn't want to sell music and therefore make money in the first place, they would not be forced to put such restrictions on their phone's cababilities, would they?
Of course, they are a huge company and like all companies, will try to make money where ever they can, but to say that the reason(s) is / are not down to money is not entirely accurate to say the least.

yeh i understand ur comments but the way he said money making ploy was as if vodafone WANTED to stop u from having them as ringtones which it doesnt... why would a big company willingly want to stop a feature that could sell twice as many units as one without that feature...
Most sales advisors and a high proportion of customers dont have the knowledge or trust to use the drm packager themselves which means our sales advisors cant use it as a unique selling point.
Vodafone is all about money... from the huge sponsorship deals to the exclusive phones... its all about cash... lol imagine vodafone live being free! (i dont mean the browsing because we all know its free now to browse) i mean the downloading like ringtones and games...
Anyway am off coz i am starting to waffle...
