> Crazy Memory Stick question!
Bookmark topic
Would it be possible to have your whole operating system (xp) on a very large memory stick(1 or 2 gb) using a USB adapter ?, as a modern bios can boot to usb.

Don't think so, maybe some kind of Unix but not XP, after a fresh install it allready takes more than 2gb but yeah I never tried nor asked so it's just my thoughts

let's say you had a memory stick of 5GB.
yeah you could boot to usb but I'm not really sure if it will accept 'externally running OS' just like that...

NO you couldn't. Even if you set the Flash Memory as primary. And your bios must support boot to USB.
The problem lies with the flash drive can not multitask which I'm sure you've experienced before! It means that it can't access the drive if you are already using it! One task at a time! If you think about that then it's imposible to put a OS onto it!
However there is a solution! If you use EXTERNAL HARDDISK via USB instead of a memory stick. It will be possible, because it will be just like your PC's Harddisk. It could multitask.
Hope it solves your problem

Thanks, it's just a daft idea that came into my head this morning. I have a friend who has the usb adapter, when I get a large enough memory stick, I will give it a go and see how far I get . My installation is 1.9gb for xp, but maybe I can find win98 se
Maybe a better idea would be to see if installing programs under xp would load up ok eg..notepad, icq and moving to larger files if this works, eventually Quake 3 or something
XP does see the memory stick as another drive, so in theory....

Even if you could do that what would be the purpose ? After x changes in hardware XP stops booting, so if you change the flash drive from on computer to another one you are screwed

What an odd idea, oh well, we all have mad brainwaves from time to time!

@msmmsm I use backup s/w on Unix that writes a boot image as well as compressed data (allows one button disaster recovery from CD/DVD/DAT or Rev drive). The latest version now supports flash devices so in theory I could try a disaster recovery from USB flash memory.
So in essence yes its a crazy question running an OS on your BIG flashy memory devicey thingy (at the mo) but it appear it can be put to good use as a boot/restore device.

thought u guys would suggest it, but i think linux is perfect for the job.
i mean, u can port a linux kernel and a simple kde in under less than 100 Mb. (kernel itself is 30Mb).
i know guys who've ported linux onto a pda!!!
maybe it'd work?

I'm sorry for being rude, but i just can't help it.
My advice: "Don't talk about something you don't know"
What the heck are you talking about?!!??!?!
1st - Multi-tasking applies to OS and Processors. Not mass storage devices. Virtual multi-tasking is used when there's only one processor.
REAL Multi-tasking is only available if you have two or more processors.
2nd - Multitasking HD's? How can a hard drive be reading data in two different locations.
3rd - So, how can you boot up from a CD? Because it has "multi-task" features? What? It has two lasers working at the same time?
Come on...
I'm sure if a BIOS supports USB boot, than it could be possible, IF the usb storage device has a MBR (or something like that) so it can be bootable.
But this is just speculation.
