At the CES Keynote, Bill Gates will preview the new Windows Mobile OS. Pocket PC gets an entirely new interface which uses two soft buttons, just like Smartphone. Smartphone’s interface gets a small overhaul to match the new Pocket PC exactly. Both OSes can be used one-handed, just like the new UIQ 3 or Palm OS 6.1. Also like those, both versions will support a wide variety of resolutions.
Microsoft has added Wi-Fi support to Smartphone, and has added persistent memory to Pocket PC, basically bringing the two OSes in line both feature and application -wise. The two things that will set Pocket PC apart are continued support for a touch screen, and Office applications: an improved version of Word and Excel (that finally support charts and text formatting!) as well as a pocket version of Powerpoint. Other software improvements will include picture syncing for Outlook contacts, a new Pictures application and a new version of Windows Media Player 10.

and of course... no doubt I'll be one of the first to get a new iPAQ running this

I'm trying to follow the rumours but Microsoft seem to have been very good at keeping the lid on this except for a few snippets

I am wondering if an update to the new win2005 will be avaiable for the current win2003SE powered smartphones. But i guess not, MS want to earn money as much as possible This message was posted from a Nokia 7650

HP privided updates for $39.99 to their original pocketpc 2000 devices to make them 2002 devices but because the original iPAQs only had 16mb ROM and 2002 required 32mb ROM some features were left out but were installable into RAM if required. I did this onmy iPAQ 3630 but was not very satisfied so bought an iPAQ 3870 which had pocketpc 2002

Then HP provided an upgrade for 2002 device to make them 2003 for the same price so I did that but again I was not satisfied with the results and bluetooth was less succesful alot of the time etc so I bought an iPAQ 4150 and then the 4700 with 2003 SE that I have now

so, I doubt I would want to upgrade to 2005 for any devices I have now. I have learned my lesson and will sell and buy new in future (which I would probably do anyway)

I guess adding new O/S onto older hardware for which it is not designed just isn't the best option

there have never been FREE upgrades by any manufacturer because the manufacturer has to pay licence fees to microsoft so that pass that on to the consumer + of course a little extra for their profit and effort

I see there is a new version 4 of activesync.

I hope they separate out the listing of software for the different platforms. Its great having one listing for both my iPAQ and JAM because they are basically the same operating system

however, when I was using the SP3i which uses windows mobile for smartphones and therefore cannot run normal windows mobile software, when I installed stuff for the SP3i that had the same name (such as betaplayer) then it overwrote the other version for the iPAQ which activesync was then not aware of

I'd also be keen to be able to sync both my iPAQ and JAM at the same time whereas currently activesync can only handle one device at a time
